I am feeling much better now but still unable to go back into the NICU for 7 to 10 days after the day I first showed symptoms (10/3) meaning sometime between next Monday and Thursday. I’m pretty let down as I am missing the babies and feeling bad that I cannot help Tracy. Since I cannot yet return to the NICU, I am only able to post the updates from speaking to Dr Hall.
The big news of the day is that Lucas and Matthew had their feeding tubes removed and that no Apnea had been observed in four days now! Despite this good news, Dr Hall was concerned that Lucas and Kacey had not gained any weight and that Matthews weight gain was actually pretty minor (5 grams). He said that Lucas was not eating well enough with nurses and that he would have to watch their weights to determine if the feeding tubes needed to go back in. Dr Hall was also concerned with Matthews breathing patterns not being stable. Matthew has not had an Apnea event that caused a large O2 drop in four days but the monitors clearly showed a pattern where he would breath normally a few times and then stop breathing for long enough to cause his oxygen levels to drop to about 90% before he would breath again. The pattern is called the “Picket fence” because of the way it looks on the monitor. As far as testing to get them out of the isolation rooms, he told me that since they were so close to being discharged they might not be retested to re-enter the NICU. He said they typically hold babies in isolation for several days for the protection of the NICU as a whole but if it looked like the babies would have to stay into next week, they would be retested. Dr Hall seemed to want to make it clear the babies might need to stay longer then the weekend which I am okay with as I want them to be healthy and ready before they come home. I just would like to get them out of isolation so that Tracy would not have to go through so many hoops to feed and care for them. Basically its a wait and see approach.
I asked when I would be allowed to return to the NICU and that’s when he told me 7 to 10 days to be safe but that it completely depended on when I stopped having symptoms. Tracy put out word to the family for help in caring of the babies after hearing I would be out for several days and I am so very grateful those who responded (Elaine, Julie, and Terrie).
Sorry, right now I do not have any photos to upload.
Thanks to all our family who continue to offer support and prayers to me, Tracy, and the triplets. Your kinds words and support mean so much to us.
