Triplets have arrived! September 11th

*Tracy*

I remember the ambulance ride clearly closely at midnight. I remember arriving the hospital cold and shaking. I had to answered questions in pain and said I am ready. The nurses said, not yet as we need to see you dilate more. All I know is another several hours went by and I was miserable! The time has come as I dilated more. Daniel was asked to leave the room as interpreter informed me. I remember hugging one big guy who is a nurse while I received three shots in my spine from anthesia doctor. I was holding tight and next thing I know I was out.

My husband tapped me in shoulder to let me know our first son Lucas came out and is doing well. I glanced over and saw him from short distance for few seconds. Daniel informed me two babies are out. I saw them departing to hallway as they assure me babies are doing fine. I fell back asleep till the surgeon’s team told me they were done. I watched them dancing and giving each other high fives. I remember them praising me. I asked Daniel what was that all about the very next day. He told me that it was a high risk situation to make sure that all babies are ok and the mother. They had not experience that successful surgery in a long time as it was a good turnout. The guy who was doing the dancing moves was the guy who gave me a big teddy bear hug when I received shots. He gave me the comfort as I needed. I was on the road to recovery and learned that all babies are in NICU. Later this afternoon I got to meet Lucas, Matthew, and Kacey. I remember feeling helpless on them having to wear oxygen mask, IV, and being all wired up. It was heartbreaking and had to hold myself together knowing that we will get through this together. At the same time I feel blessed having three more beautiful children.

We were now on the ambulance that took us to St Davids Medical Center. We arrived into yet another freezing cold room where Tracy was put through all the same questions and tests she had already undergone. After more waiting and more pain meds, a nurse came in and said she was now at 3cm and “It looks like it’s going to happen after all”.  She left the room to speak to the doctor and later came back to tell me they were preparing for the surgery much to Tracy’s relief as she had been vocalizing she was ready. I put on the funny paper clothes they make you wear and Tracy was taken away into the operating room. I was told to wait outside until they got everything ready inside and while waiting at the door, I was filled with worry, anxiety, excitement, pride, frustration to name a few. After about 5 minutes, I was allowed inside where Tracy was comfortably sleeping on the table with a huge blue cloth wall below her shoulders. I was good to see Tracy sleeping after all she’d been through the last 12 hours there was some comfort in knowing she wouldn’t have to feel anymore pain for a while.

I sat down and watched as the doctors started their work and then was nudged by the nurse in time to stand up and watch the team pulling Lucas out. While he was being moved to the table Matthew was pulled out and then Kacey. Lucas and Kacey were put on the table inside the room with us and I saw Lucas with his eyes open just kinda looking around the room taking it in. It was truly an amazing moment to see him in such good health. Kacey was next to him and although she started out fine, she was now getting some assistance breathing. Matthew was rushed to another table outside of the room where I saw someone working hard to help keep him breathing before he was rushed away. Soon after, I followed Lucas and Kacey as they were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Tracy’s surgery was completed. Before Lucas and Kacey were taken, the doctors and nurses quickly rolled them next to Tracy who was now awake so she could see them. Tracy reached out and touched Lucas before they were rolled out of the room. I followed Lucas and Kacey as they were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where Matthew was and Tracy’s surgery was completed.

I was there as doctors and nurses were able to calm Matthews breathing enough and all three were placed inside their incubators and placed on a CPAP machine to assist in regulating their breathing. I told the nurses the names of the babies and was able to take a picture of each before they where closed up. These were the pictures I used to tell our friends and family of our blessings.

Notice that Kacey was tied down? She was the feisty one of the three who was pushing hands off and pulling wires, airlines, and whatever she was able to grab or kick at. The restraint was removed as soon as all her lines were placed and working. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to have to watch your newborns be put through all this chaos and trauma and I had to remind myself over and over how it was for their own good. After a few minutes, I said goodbye to get back to Tracy who I was told should be out of surgery soon.

I waited in the waiting area and called Yum to update her until I was able to see Tracy who was now again sleeping hard in the recovery area. After about an hour of so she woke up asking about the babies. As we waited for he to be admitted into her room, I snapped a quick photo of us.

Tracy did an incredible job and after she was awake, we were taken to her room where she quickly went to sleep. I went down to check on the babies who were now calmer and spoke to their nurse Carrie. Seeing our babies laying there with tubes, IV’s, and wires inside a box is a pretty helpless feeling but a good talk with the nurses was helpful. All three needed “respiratory assistance” as they called it but the nurses said they were actually very stable and were looking good. I was able to briefly hold Lucas during my last check of the day!
